This Month in History

African American Olympic athlete Archie Williams (1915-1993) was born in the month of May, in Oakland California. Williams, along with Jesse Owens, defeated German athletes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and helped debunk Adolf Hitler's theory of Aryan racial superiority. Williams won a gold medal in the 400-meter race. After the Olympics, he went on to earn a mechanical engineering degree and became an airplane pilot.
