At the age of seven, in Chiapas, Mexico, Yoni was shot during the uprising of the Zapatistas. Immigrating to the United States, Yoni was bullied at school and sought protection from a gang when he attended Watsonville High. Yoni's life story and message: Why Not Put the Gun Down? is relevant for youth involved in gangs and adults involved in war. Yoni's life is a story of triumph and courage.

Macio Thompkins is a 19 year old employee of the City of Atlanta and a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. Growing up on the Northwest side of Atlanta, Macio had to overcome numerous challenges and hurdles to achieve his dream of graduating high school and being a model of success for his family and friends. However, thanks to Beyond the Bricks program offered this summer at Georgia State University, Macio dreams now include sharing his talent with the world and his message of determination and success.

A nanoscientist and professional athlete, Grant Korgan has never shied away from a challenge. After breaking is back in an extreme snowmobiling injury, Grant began an extraordinary journey of recovery, the first year of which inspired his book, Two Feet Back. Through hard work, positivity and love Grant has regained the ability to walk with two canes. On January 17, 2012 he became the first person with a spinal cord injury to push himself the final degree of latitude (80 miles) to the geographical South Pole.
