Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual program (held the week before Thanksgiving in November) where people come together across the country to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Participating groups spend the week holding a series of educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy events.
How can you help?
The lack of clean, well fitting clothes and shoes causes great hardship beyond exposure to the elements. It hurts self-image and one’s chances to get ahead. People experiencing homelessness must travel light, with few opportunities to safely store or adequately clean what they can’t carry. When poorly dressed, they also have little chance to succeed on job interviews. One way you can help is by donating any needed supplies to local government approved shelters or other homeless services in your community (contact them first to see what items they are in need of since most agencies have limited storage space).
